Writing & Making a Will

- Step 1 – Have a think !
- What instructions do you want to give in the event you need residential nursing care?
- How do you want to distribute your estate?
- What assets do you have?
- What are your assets worth?
- Who will be your Executor(s)?
- Who will be your Witness?
- Who would you like to act as your Attorney?
- Where will you keep the Will?
- Step 2 – Use whatever tax exemptions you can
- Have you utilised the current nil-rate band for Inheritance Tax purposes?
- Have you taken advantage of your annual gift exemption?
- Have you considered leaving gifts to Charities?
- Step 3 – Draft the Will
- Appoint a professionally qualified person to help you make a Will
- Step 4 – Review and Sign the Will
- Once your Will is drafted read it carefully to check everything is correct and that the right assets and amounts have been given to each beneficiary. Finally, sign & date the new Will and have your signature witnessed.
- Step 5 – Store the Will
- Step 6 – Destroy previous Wills and Codicils
- Step 7 – Review your Will on a regular basis
